Comments policy

You are welcome to post comments on my blog if I say anything that interests you, annoys you or whatever. Don’t be put off if you don’t know me personally: I don’t mind at all. The purpose of my blog is for me to discuss things that I find interesting, and I’m also interested in fostering discussion and feedback on these topics. That is why I keep comments open.

However, I do have a few ground rules.

  • I reserve the right to edit, moderate, delete or reject comments, or to close a blog entry off to further comments at any time, without giving a reason.
  • The fact that I do not moderate, delete or respond to a comment does not mean that I agree with it. Opinions expressed in the comments reflect the points of view of their respective authors, and not mine.
  • By leaving a comment, you grant me a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to reproduce and/or adapt it in any website, product, publication or other media that I produce, either personally or in the course of my employment.
  • Please be civil. Disagreeing with me or your fellow commenters is acceptable, but personal attacks, swearing, offensive or abusive language, harassment and the like are not. Comments with offensive, abusive or obscene language may be edited or deleted at my sole discretion.
  • If I edit your comment for any reason, I will leave a note that I have done so unless the only edits are to correct typographical errors.
  • PR for your company is not acceptable. Comments posted with the real or apparent purpose of promoting products or services not directly and centrally relevant to the discussion in question, or containing links to off-topic websites, will be reported as spam.
  • The “Website” option is for personal websites and blogs only. Comments with links to company or business websites will be deleted and reported as spam, irrespective of the content of the comment. Company blogs may be allowed at my sole discretion however, provided that your comment adds something substantive and constructive to the discussion. If you are in doubt, leave this space blank.

Most bona fide comments will appear immediately. However, I also have some technological measures in place to prevent blog spam:

  • Comments containing more than two hyperlinks will automatically be rejected.
  • This blog does not use BBCode. Comments containing any BBCode style links will be rejected.
  • Comments are closed on blog entries older than 90 days unless they have had comments within the last 90 days.
  • Repeated attemps to submit spam or comments which exceed the above limits will result in your IP address being temporarily blocked from commenting anywhere on my blog.
  • I reserve the right to vary these limits without notice.

If your comment doesn’t appear, it may be because the world and his dog think that it is spam. The world and his dog have been known to be wrong, however, so I do double check from time to time.
